Reflection

All of us have that fond memory from our childhood that we will never forget, and as for me my memory it was more than one time. When I was around 10 years old I went to England. After the first time I was hooked! I had been to England before a couple times before but I loved to come back. I loved everything about England, the snow, the people, getting to visit my family and getting to explore it. England was so beautiful in the winter time, even though it would get below zero most of the time. This trip was memorable because we actually got to go in a real castle. It was the Warwick castle; it was amazing because you could tour the whole castle. After that we went to a town called Warwickshire and what made it a day to never forget was I got to go see where Shakespeare was born. I got to tour around the house in which the greatest play writer was born. This memory means so much because it was the last vacation my whole family took together. My grandfather died before we got to go to England again, and he loved to go to England to visit his family. England has brought me and my family together over the holidays and I think that’s what makes these memories so important. This has made me appreciate my family and friends more so it has shaped me into a better person today.

My reading habits today and when I was a child have changed in many ways. My reading habits are basic, although I only read when I have to I actually pay more attention when I read now. I look for new vocabulary words and try to make sense of the text by learning about the background and thinking outside the box. My reading habits today are improving and I am still going to work on them so there is no room for improvement anymore. I don’t have many strengths as a reader but I have a lot of weaknesses. When I read I get distracted easy and tend to take a lot of breaks. I don’t like to read so I think that’s why I get distracted so easily. My grandmother loves to read. She will seat on her couch and read a book in one day. Every since I was little she has read and she told me she loves to read. When I was growing up I wasn’t really encouraged to read. I would get books from the school library and read the required reading. I just wasn’t into reading that much, it wasn’t one of my favorite hobbies. My parents did not read to me as a child because my mom was busy, she was a single mother so she didn’t have the time to read. My grandmother read to me for a little bit because my mom had to work so I was with my grandmother but she didn’t read to me continuously.

After studying and learning the vocabulary required in class I had a better understanding to the words in the text. I see how it challenges the reader at times and how they want you to learn and to understand their texts. Vocabulary is very important and is used in everyday society. From studying the vocabulary it’s introduced me to new and exciting words that I can use whenever and where ever. Not much of our society use words that are more complex then others because they tend to be lazy or just don’t know the word. Mostly its educated people who use more complex words, at which make them seem smarter. So when people use words that are more complex or harder people tend to think you are educated. That’s one reason why I want to use my vocabulary words in my day to day life so I sound more educated. Although I have yet to hear the vocabulary words out loud I still try to use them in my day to day life. When I approach an unfamiliar word I look it up now. I used to just read past it and not even look it at it or guess what the meaning was but now I have been finding words I don’t know and figuring what they are in the dictionary. For the most part I am remembering some of the words from our vocabulary list, but I do tend to forget most of them after the test.
